DOT SHOP IS ON ITS WAY!

Posted 17 January 2013 by Kanoti

NEWSFLASH!! OUR LICHTENSTEIN INSPIRED GAME IS NOW LIVE. PLAY DOT SHOP

GUEST BLOG ALERT! This is from our friend Emilia over at Kanoti. Enjoy – any questions, ask them in the comments, and we’ll get back you ASAP! SJ

——————————–

We are super excited to tell you about a new app we’re working on, due to arrive in Games very soon.

In the app,’Dot Shop’  you can create your very own comic panel in the style of a “Pop Art” artist like Roy Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein is most famous for his big, action-packed paintings inspired by American comic books, but he did have other subjects too:

Landscape in Fog 1996, Roy Lichtenstein © Estate of Roy Lichtenstein/DACS 2012

To use ‘Dot Shop’, first you upload a photo of your own face (or your Dad’s, or your sister’s, or anybody you like!). If you haven’t got a photo, you can choose a portrait from the Tate Collection instead. ‘Dot Shop’ will work its magic on your image so it looks like it’s made up of lots and lots of dots, just like a Pop Art painting. You can play with some of the settings (like the size of the dots and the brightness of the picture) to get it to look just how you want it!

Once you’re happy with your Pop Art-y picture, you can personalise it with all kinds of extras like tears, explosions, speech bubbles and more.

This app is extra-special because you can play it on your computer and on an iPad. You might have noticed that this isn’t normally possible. So we’re using a special technology called HTML5. People have been using HTML to build normal websites for years, and HTML5 is just the latest version, which lets you build loads of other cool stuff like games.

Keep an eye out for “Dot Shop” which will be online next month. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Posted 25 August 2012 by SJ

Hi All – enjoying the summer hols?

So, remember when Charlotte wrote us a guest blog talking about the time she made a spin painting with Damien Hirst?

Well I’ve managed to get hold of a couple of pics of her spin-painted skull. LOOK!

Also – well done to Charlotte for noticing the Damien Hirst-designed flag in the closing ceremony.

YOU HAVE THE EYES OF AN EAGLE, CHARLOTTE.

In other Hirst-related news, our friend Paige Dansinger has been using Draw Something to play with art. Check this out on Instagram and look below.

You can see more of Paige’s work on her blog. It’s super impressive!

CHARLOTTE GOES TO HIRST – **GUEST BLOG SPECIAL**

Posted 18 May 2012 by Charlotte

Special Friday treat, everyone. Charlotte Dixon, 10, went to the Damien Hirst show and kindly decided to report back.

(This was originally posted over here, but had permission to repost)

TAKE IT AWAY, C! and enjoy everyone.

——————-

The way that I found about the new Damien Hirst exhibition was about 4 weeks ago when I saw the Tate exhibition on a documentary.
I already knew about him but this got me more interested in him.

On Saturday, my mom and I got to go to the exhibition – I was jumping for joy! The exhibition fills 14 rooms over one floor except for one special piece. When we went in there was a lot of people and the first thing I saw was the hair dryer pushing up the golf ball [What Goes Up Must Come Down, 1994].  But I didn’t care about that because I went right to Dead Head [With Dead Head, 1991] which is a picture of Damien with a dead head.  Damien didn’t kill the man – I think the man donated his body to science but a lot of people still thought it was wrong.  I didn’t.

I wanted to see the Butterfly room, Diamond Skull, and the A Thousand Years which I saw on the documentary which they all looked amazing to me !!!!!

When I saw A Thousand Years, 1990 exhibition at first I thought it was bloody and gruesome but then when you properly look, you can notice the eye lashes on the cows head and then you notice the flies. Normally when you see a fly, you ignore it (or try to kill it!) but with this exhibition you start to notice details and specific sights.

The thing that stood out to me was the Butterfly Room [In and Out of Love]. I thought the butterfly room in the Damien Hirst exhibition was flabbergasting. I, and everyone around me was amazed, even though it was a shame that hundreds of butterflies pull themselves from their cocoons only to die, surrounded by gawping visitors.

I found it amazing that the wings of the butterflies were ugly and boring patterns on the outside but as soon as they opened their wings suddenly there was a magnificent pattern almost like someone had spent years and painted a lovely oil painting.

Another favorite was the half cow [Mother and Child Divided, 1993]. Interestingly from the documentary I think this was the second attempt because the first one he didn’t cut in a straight line! I really liked being able to look around and see the insides because normally you don’t get to see body parts like this.  I really want to be a forensic scientist so this was my heaven!

The diamond room [Judgement Day 2009], pill room [Pharmacy, 1992], Spin Paintings, and dots [Spot Paintings] were fun and quirky but not as quirky as the other parts of the exhibition.

The best was The Love of God – a skull covered in diamonds! You have to queue for a little bit but it is SO worth it! They only let a certain amount of people in at a time which is good because then it’s not that crowded. When we were allowed to go in, there was three body guards. When you walk in there was people in there but my eyes instantly went to the teeth which are not covered in diamonds.  The skull is … no words to describe it really!  I could have stayed and looked at it for a long time as the longer I looked at it the more I started to noticed things like there were diamonds actually inside the mouth and everywhere.

I recommend everyone should go to the Damien Hirst exhibition because it’s so amazing.  It is probably best for 6+ as it could be a bit overwhelming for young kids.

We are going back in August and I can’t wait!

MAKE YOUR OWN DAMIEN HIRST SPIN PAINTING!

Posted 27 March 2012 by SJ

** THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!! BEST OF LUCK EVERYBODY**

Exciting opportunity, everyone!

Beautiful, childish, expressive, tasteless, not art, over simplistic, throw away, kid's stuff, lacking integrity, rotating, nothing but visual candy, celebrating, sensational, inarguably beautiful painting (for over the sofa) 1996

Fancy making your own spin painting in the style of Damien Hirst, Britain’s most famous artist?

Your school could win one of just eight places to be part of a mass spin painting event in London’s iconic Covent Garden Piazza on Thursday 14 June 2012. All you have to do is answer this simple question:

**WHICH WATERY CREATURE DID DAMIEN HIRST FAMOUSLY PUT IN A TANK AND  MAKE INTO A PIECE OF ART?**

a) jellyfish
b) shark
c) goldfish

Ask your teachers to email your answers to kids@tate.org.uk before Friday 4 May 2012. Then cross your fingers!

We’re accepting entries from primary schools, and you’ll need to be aged 7-11 years old.

If you win, your school needs to choose eight of you to come to London and make your own spin paintings in Covent Garden.
Of course, you can keep your painting as a fantastic souvenir of the day, and get free tickets to see the Damien Hirst exhibition at Tate Modern until 9 September!

Ooh, and we’ll have a Spin painting tool for you in Games very, very soon. Will keep you posted on that!

===================================

The rules! << Show this bit to your adults.
Competition open to all schools with children in Key Stage 2 in the UK.
One entry per school to be submitted by a teacher before 12 midnight on Friday 4 May 2012.
Eight schools will be chosen at random and informed by 11 May 2012.
The winning schools will be advertised on this website.
Eight children aged 7-11 will be chosen by the winning school to be part of the event and must be accompanied by a teacher.
Schools are responsible for their own travel arrangements to the event, which will take place between 10.00 and 15.30 on Thursday 14 June 2012 at the Covent Garden piazza, London.
This day is during term-time so children must be available to leave school and attend.
Each school will get to keep their paintings, which will be mailed to them within a month of the event.
Two complimentary tickets will be given to each winning child and one teacher per school to the Damien Hirst exhibition at Tate Modern from 4 April to 9 September 2012.
Schools are responsible for the health and safety of the accompanying children

GO DOTTY FOR KUSAMA!

Posted 7 February 2012 by SJ

UPDATE – The Obliteration Room closed on Friday 16 March, not the 18th!

Hi Everyone,

Just a note to tell you that our Kusama show at Tate Modern opens this Thursday. I can’t wait!

Yayoi Kusama is best known for her repeating dot patterns and she works across many mediums – painting, drawing, sculpture, film and installations.

Excitingly, we’re also having an Obliteration Room from Feb 9th to  16th 18th March, where you can come to Tate Modern and collaborate on a massive piece of art. We’ll give you coloured stickers, and you make your mark and transform the room. We’ll be taking photos as the work progresses, so do check back for updates! If your adults are on Twitter, follow #obliterationroom!

Hopefully see you there!
SJ
